Agassiz
National Wildlife Refuge |
![]() |
Agassiz NWR is approximately 61,500 acres and is located about 20 miles north of Thief River Falls and 8 miles south of Thief Lake. The refuge is composed of primarily cattail marsh wetlands but is also home to several other interesting wetland types such as calcareous fens and swamp lands (wetlands with trees). The refuge is an important waterfowl breeding ground as well as an important stop for migrating birds. The water levels are managed and also provide valuable flood storage capacity during wet years. Many species of waterfowl can be observed including loons, green wing teal, grebes, great and lessor scaups, wood ducks, buffleheads, mallards, and cormorants. Spring and fall migrant warblers are also abundant. |
