| Between Old Crossing Treaty Historic Park (in Huot) and Crookston there is limited river access (see map for details). For this trip we put-in off of Township Rd. 248 in Polk County at about river mile 64. The access area that we chose was not an official entry point and was extremely muddy. Nevertheless, once we were underway the scenery was well worth it. This portion of the river meanders through mostly cottonwood forest with some agricultural and rural residential lands bordering the river. We portaged on dam at about river mile 62. Exit the river on the north bank (left bank if headed downstream). The portage is fairly easy with the exception of a low barbed wire fence to hop over. Otters, muskrat, beaver, deer, Bald Eagles, wood ducks, mallards, geese, and the Kingfisher are a few of the critters one can observe along this stretch. Fishing was sub-parr, but a planned modification to the dam in the city of Crookston might allow more fish to move upstream of Crookston. |
