The
Fertile Sand Hills were originally formed by Glacial Lake Agassiz and
later periods of drought and wind. Today several rare Minnesota landscapes
and species make their home in the Sand Hills. Dunes are a unique formation
in the Red River Basin. Wind blown sands ripple across the dune area
and eventually cascade over the steep north face of the dune. Standing
atop Lookout Point, on the south facing bluff, provides a spectacular
view of the Sand Hill River Valley.
The
Nature Center has a meeting area, modern bathrooms and displays about
the Sand Hills and its flora and fauna. The facility is open to the
public and available for special occasions
The
Botanical Garden provides examples of prairie grasses native to this
part of Minnesota. Additionally, there are over 10 miles of hiking and
cross-country ski trails (view the map)
through a variety of unique terrain.
Campers can stay at the 10-site campground near the Nature Center.
