The
Prairie Wetlands Learning Center is owend by the city of Fergus Falls
and operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The surrounding
land is owened and managed by the USF&WS as part of their National
Wildlife Refuge System. The Center is an outdoor classrom featuring
325 acres of native and restored prairie, more than 2 dozen wetlands
and an oak savanna. There are more than four miles of trails that are
open year round from sunrise-to-sunset. In summer you'll see blazing
star, coneflowers, the cup plant, big bluestem, and many other native
prairie plants. The prairie wetlands abound with butterflies, other
insects, ducks, hawks, muskrat, and deer. Inside the Visitor Center
there is an exhibit area with permanent interpretive and educational
exhibits, a book and gift store, and plenty of meeting space.
Educational
programs and meetings occur year round and there is a dormitory that
accomodates up to 80 people that has been used by elementary through
college students. Scout groups, education and conservation professional
utilze the facility.
