The summertime sees a full house at Gooseberry Falls State Park, where interesting vacationers flock to try out the cross country ski trails and other attractions. When you go to the visitor’s center, you’ll find a lot of interactive exhibits, a fully stocked gift shop, and premium restrooms. There are also waterfalls on both sides of the iconic bridge that threads through the park. You can visit both in the spring and summer, but fall and winter are really the seasons you should choose to visit.
Camping
You can go camping in this beautiful and fresh state park. You can either go by yourself or even take friends and family. The park offers a ton of various amenities that will make your camping time immersive and relaxing.
The campsite is open from mid-May to mid-September and offers:
- 2 handicapped accessible sites
- 70 drive-in sites; 50 reservable (40′ RV length limit)
- 3 pull-through sites
- 3 tent-only group sites, each up to 50 people
- 1 kayak site on the Lake Superior Water Trail
- A seasonal dumping station
- Firewood and ice are sold at the park
- Accessible toilets and showers, vault toilets
Historical Sites
There are a lot of buildings and structures that are part of the Civilian Conservation Corps. There is a lot of history that comes with each and every one of these structures, which is why they are also registered in the National Register of Historic Places. You can pick up a CCC Tour map for a self-guided historic tour or ask a part of the staff to lead you around. You won’t be bored when you hear all about the stories associated with the park!
Weddings and Special Events
You can celebrate any sort of special event at the park if you would like. There are two shelters available that are available for reservations. The Lakeview Shelter provides sturdy picnic tables and great restroom facilities that are suitable for both picnics and receptions. The other option is the Lady Slipper Lodge which has benches and can be used for various programs and ceremonies. You can call ahead to book either of the two venues and have your event in a lush state park.
Picnic Areas
If you want to have a nice rustic picnic, the state park has various areas you can use. Here are the areas available:
- Three picnic areas, one of which is along the river and the other two are located along the lake
- Two enclosed shelters, both of which are open to reservations with an extra fee charged
Hiking
You can go hiking all around the state park. There’s a 20-mile trail, various trails that lead to 5 beautiful waterfalls and run up and down Lake Superior:
- The Superior Hiking Trail passes through the park
- A 1-mile handicapped accessible trail that leads to the main falls
- 4 miles of winter hiking trails
- Exciting snowshoeing trails
Other Activities
Asides from hiking, you can experience a lot of other activities when you visit the park. There’s mountain biking, fishing, snowmobiling and cross country skiing too! It all depends on what you’re in the mood for. So if you want some good adventure, book a visit right away!
