If you’ve ever been to Minnesota, you’ll know all the amazing things it has to offer. There are numerous lakes upon lakes, including Lake Superior and the origin of the majestic Mississippi River. The Loon – Minnesota’s State Bird
In addition to the most iconic things about the state, there’s the state bird. Minnesota’s state bird is called the Loon (Gavia Immer). It officially became the state bird in 1981. You won’t recognize the scientific name because it is always commonly referred to as the loon. These birds are normally large and sport black and white plumage. They also have red eyes.
Not only that, but their wingspans are around five feet long. Their bodies can be as long as three feet at any time and they can also be clumsy on land. However, like ducks in water, they take to the water immediately when they enter it. They’re excellent swimmers, especially underwater and can also take to the skies, being high-speed flyers. They can dive underwater to depths of 90 feet if they want to grab a fish to eat.
You can recognize a loon once you hear it from far away. They have a unique repertoire of cries, wails and even yodels. Their calls can be quite eerie and can echo around the lakes of Minnesota. Around 12,000 of these waterfowl nest in the state, and are found in many lakes. You can easily spot this nifty and highly skilled bird if you spend some time wading through a deep lake. However, they know how to camouflage themselves so keep your eyes open.
