Spirit Mountain

If you’re thinking of sprucing up your vacation with some skiing, head on over to Spirit Mountain! Spirit Mountain is in Duluth, Minnesota’s ski area. Completed in 1974, it was established by the City of Duluth. It is the second-highest ski hill in Minnesota with a vertical height of about 700 feet (210 m). The executive director has been Brandy Ream since 2014.  On December 19–20, 1974, the Spirit Mountain ski area held its grand opening.

The idea to open Spirit Mountain was put forward by former Olympian George Hovland, who set out the cross-country trails with the support of Duluth Ben Boo’s then-mayor. During its growth, local businessman Manley Goldfine served as chairman of the Spirit Mountain Authority. The city’s winter sales greatly increased.

The expansion of the sprawling Interstate 35 to Duluth was a major contributor to its initial success. A view from the top of Spirit Mountain looking north to the St. Louis River. Spirit Mountain is known for having a large park on the land. The park features jumps of 15 feet (4.6 m) to over 60 feet (18 m), as well as several bars, boxes and other “jibs.”
